Jaguars Pull Off Stunner; Waive RB Leonard Fournette

The Jacksonville Jaguars spent a good portion of the offseason looking to deal third-year running back Leonard Fournette, in the end finding no takers.

Instead of going through the motions with Fournette the team made the decision Monday to simply waive the back, despite two seasons of going over 1,000 yards rushing.

Fournette was the fourth overall pick of the Jaguars in the 2017 draft, and helped Jacksonville make it to the AFC Championship game his rookie season.

There were reports of Fournette being yet another player in Jacksonville who wanted out, and once Tom Coughlin was fired last December, the writing was on the wall that the running backs time eventually would be up.

“Really just trying to take the team and put the best team together from what we’ve seen in our practices so, at the end of the day, I just felt that was the best decision for us as a team,” coach Doug Marrone told reporters on why the decision was made so close to the season opener.

“I think it gives us the best opportunity with the skillsets that we have with the other players in there, I just thought that was the best for the team and doing it now. We exhausted all trade opportunities; we weren’t able to get anything there so I just felt that now we can work on the team and the plan and get ourselves ready for the season.”

Fournette will find employment somewhere in the league, but for now the Jaguars will focus on giving the ball it appears to Chris Thompson, who will likely be the number one when the season opens.
