Doug Marrone Names Gardner Minshew the Starter Over Nick Foles

Minshew Mania has returned to Jacksonville as Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone announced Monday that the talented rookie quarterback will start in Week 14 against the Chargers according to John Oehser of jaguars.com.

Marrone added that this move is “ideally” for the team’s final four games in 2019. He credited Minshew’s mobility as the reason for the change but Nick Foles’ fate was sealed after Sunday’s abysmal three-and-out fest against Tampa Bay’s porous pass defense.

Minshew didn’t complete the comeback against the Bucs on Sunday but did previously evade pressure and play above expectations in his last eight starts. Plus the mustache is cool.

The Jags have a huge offseason problem on their hands after signing Foles to a massive free agent contract in March. They will likely attempt to sweeten the pot with a draft pick when attempting to trade Foles’ contract this offseason but we would be surprised if there are any takers.

Designating the veteran as a post-June 1 release would entail the Jaguars take on dead cap hits worth $21.3M and $12.5M over the next two seasons.

On top of the Foles contract and salary cap issues, the Jaguars have to determine if Minshew is truly good enough to be their quarterback of the future.

The final four games of the season will be part of that evaluation but you have to wonder if any of the folks doing the evaluating-including Tom Coughlin and Marrone-will still be in Jacksonville to make decisions about 2020 and beyond.
