Jaguars Executive VP Tom Coughlin Speaks Out, Declines to Speak on Marrone’s Future

The Jags are sitting at 4-7 after 11 games, clearly not where the team wanted to be just two years removed from playing in the AFC Championship game.

Tom Coughlin took it upon himself to speak to the media on Wednesday, and it came off as a testy press conference to say the least as he spoke for just about five minutes about the state of the team.

One thing that Coughlin refused to speak about is the future of coach Doug Marrone, who many think won’t back in 2020.

“The head coach is the voice of the program, OK,” Coughlin said. “I feel at this point in time that I’m needed to speak. Doug has come before you with his message literally every day since the start of the season. If I can help reinforce that message, then that’s why I’m here.

“We’re all in this together. We all want to win. You all want to win. I know that. You don’t want to write about a team that’s not winning; that’s not any fun. And we’re all in this thing together.”

Coughlin, who is 73 and has won two Super Bowls as the coach of the Giants declined to discuss whether he plans to return in 2020.

“There are five games to go,” said Coughlin.

Coughlin, Marrone and General Manager David Caldwell, signed a two-year extension in 2018 that puts them under contract through the 2021 season.
