Jaguars Place DT Marcell Dareus on IR, Ink DT Akeem Spence

The Jaguars have placed defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and signed former Eagles defensive tackle Akeem Spence to take his place according to the team’s Twitter account.
Dareus underwent core muscle surgery on Thursday and will need 4-6 weeks to recover. It is unclear if he will be one of the players Jacksonville designates for return later this season.

Originally the No.3-overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Alabama by the Bills, the 29-year-old Dareus has been a mainstay of the Jags’ defensive line since joining the team in 2017.

He has played 40% of the team’s defensive snaps thus far this season and his absence will be felt, particularly in defending the run.

It did not take Spence long to find a new home as the Eagles released him just four days ago. He failed to register a sack or a tackle for loss in six games in Philly but has been a competent run-stuffer in the past.

Originally a fourth-round pick out of Illinois by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013, the 27-year-old Spence has logged time with the Bucs, the Lions, and the Dolphins in addition to the Eagles. He will provide needed depth to the Jags’ defensive line.
