Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell on the Blake Bortles Deal: “It’s a Good Deal for Us”

Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles’ new three-year contract included $26 million guaranteed and lowered his cap number from $19 million (which was the fifth-year option) to $10 million, Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union reports.

“It’s a good deal for us,” said general manager Dave Caldwell, who was available to answer questions for the first time since April 29. “For us, we look at our adjusted cap number and [Bortles] is less than five percent. We feel like that’s a good portion to have for your starting quarterback and it allows us the financial flexibility to take care of other positions, which Blake made it clear that he wants to try to keep this team together as much as possible.”

“I thought he had a nice year,” Caldwell said. “The one thing I know about him is that he is mentally and physically tough as they come. For everything he has been through and all of the things people say he can’t do – he has proven that he can do it.

“He is not a place-holder. This wasn’t a decision where he’s going to be here for a year and we’re going to be keeping our eyes out.”
