Jaguars Advance to AFC Title Game; Lay Knockout Blow on Steelers 45-42

Last week the Jaguars put up just 10 points against the Bills in a home playoff win to earn another trip to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers.

Sunday – they would not be denied.

The Jaguars laid a whooping on the Steelers that might have been one of the most fun in team history, they never trailed and in the end got big play after big play in a 45-42 win.

The win will put the Jags in New England for the AFC Title Game next Sunday. It’s the third time they are in the game before the Super Bowl, and the second time they have to take out the Pats in order to get there, the first time losing in the 1996 season.

They also lost at home to the Titans in the 1999 season in the AFC Title game.

Sunday though they dominated from the start, as they built a 21-0 lead, and when Blake Bortles had to make big plays to keep the lead in the second half when the Steelers were in position to tie the game, he did so.

On the day Bortles was 14-for-26 for 214 yards with a score, no picks, and he was never sacked despite having at times heavy pressure. He also rushed for 35 yards on five carries.

Rookie back Leonard Fournette ran for 109 yards on 25 carries, and this after having to leave the game in the second quarter with a bum ankle for a few series.

After building a 21-0 lead, the defense did allow the Steelers to get back in the game, as Ben Rothlisberger threw for 469 yards and five scores, but they made two huge fourth down stops and never allowed the Steelers to draw back to even.

The nail in the coffin was a huge 40-yard screen to T.J. Yeldon after a fourth-down stop on third-down to put the ball at the Steelers 30 with the Jags leading it 35-28, and then five plays later the Jags were back in the end zone, building the lead to 42-28 and making it a lead that was good enough.

Now the question that they upset the Steelers will be – can they do it again in New England next week? It will be fun to watch, and no matter how you look at it, it’s the Jags now against the world.
