Jaguars Pickup Fifth-Year Option on QB Blake Bortles

Ahead of Wednesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, the Jaguars decided today they will pick up the fifth-year (2018) contract option on quarterback Blake Bortles, the Florida Times-Union reports.

Bortles’ 2018 salary – which could be nearly $18 million – is guaranteed only for injury. The Jaguars can release him after this season without having any dead money on the salary cap.

The decision on Bortles comes after the Jaguars did not use a draft pick on a quarterback.

In a statement released by the team, executive vice president Tom Coughlin said: “This is a smart business decision for the team for several reasons. It makes sense for us going forward and it’s good for Blake and for the Jaguars.”

Had they not picked up the option, Bortles would have been an unrestricted free agent next March.

Bortles’ salary cap number this year is $6,571,983 – his entire $20,654,802 contract was fully guaranteed upon signing.
