Chad Henne should start for the Jaguars

Gabbert looks to pass

Blaine Gabbert is the future of the Jacksonville Jaguars, there’s no doubt in my mind about that.

But, Chad Henne should be the starter in week one.

Gabbert struggled in his first year as the Jaguars starter, and many have been quick to label him a bust, but his struggles should not have surprised anyone. Gabbert wasn’t ready to be a starter in his first year, let alone two weeks into a lockout shortened season.

Blaine Gabbert had, and still has tremendous upside, but the negative aspects of his game highlighted by college scouts are the same negatives that were made apparent during his first season. He’d had limited work under center — Missouri run the spread offense — and he sometimes got anxious and unsettled when the opposing pass rush got to him.

The Jaguars need to start again with Gabbert. He needs to be developed slowly; he needs solid coaching;  and he needs a good mentor.

Chad Henne can be that mentor.

Starting Henne in week one and allowing Gabbert to sit and learn is perfect for his development and something the Jaguars should have done last season. The realistic truth is the Jaguars are not expecting to win a Super Bowl this year and they don’t need Gabbert to be the finished product right now. So why rush his development.

Many quarterbacks sat in their rookie year — Aaron Rodgers, Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees to name a few — and all say they learnt valuable lessons whilst standing on the sidelines watching a more experienced player. There are obviously exceptions, and many of those exceptions have come in recent years, putting an added pressure on Gabbert to succeed now. However, all those exceptions were much more NFL ready than Blaine Gabbert was coming out of college.

The new coaching staff needs to treat Gabbert as a rookie again, be patient and develop him slowly, throwing him into the fire for a second season is not the answer.

Starting Henne in week one is not giving up on Gabbert, it makes sense.

The Jaguars future is Blaine Gabbert, let’s make sure that future’s bright.
