Jaguars must re-sign key players

The Jaguars are expected to be active in the free agent market when it opens this week as they attempt to find upgrades at wide receiver, defensive end and cornerback.

However, before the market opens on Tuesday they must try and finalize deals with several key players already inside the organisation.

The Jaguars have already taken care of two important signings, franchising kicker Josh Scobee, and re-signing cornerback Rashean Mathis, but if the Jaguars are going to continue to make progress in 2012 they have to re-sign both, defensive end Jeremy Mincey, and safety Dwight Lowery, who are set to become free agents on Tuesday.

Mincey and Lowery were both important parts of the Jaguars sixth ranked defence in 2011. Mincey anchored the defensive line, and has led the team in sacks for the past two seasons, and Lowery, despite battling through injuries, solidified the Jaguars secondary, and formed a great partnership with Dawan Landry.

If the Jaguars don’t re-sign them and they become free agents, Mincey and Lowery will both be highly sought after. Mincey is arguably the best defensive end available after Houston’s Mario Williams, and Lowery is widely regarded as the best safety in the market.

New Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has already said that he will spend to the cap limit to make the Jaguars competitive, and he recently said in a live blog with the Florida-Times-Union that whilst the team will spend money, it needs to spend wisely “It’s not only about money. It’s about availability and value” Kahn said, “We have resources that we can deploy on fielding a competitive team. … We’re looking at all the situations, Gene [Smith] and his staff, we reviewed it yesterday. We want to look at the complete picture. Not only use the resources but using wisely.”

Spending the money on Mincey and Lowery should definitely be considered as spending wisely as they are both integral parts to an already strong defence in Jacksonville.

According to Tania Ganguli the Jaguars have been negotiating with both players since the scouting combine two weeks ago, but they are not yet close to a deal.

The other Jaguar’s unrestricted free agents are defensive ends C.J. Mosley and Matt Roth, punter Nick Harris, quarterback Luke McCown and defensive backs David Jones and C.C. Brown. The Jaguars have reportedly been negotiating with DE C.J. Mosley but the rest are expected to hit free agent market on Tuesday.

Jaguars fans can only hope that as the deadline approaches the negotiations speed up for Jeremy Mincey and Dwight Lowery’s services in 2012.
