Defense Saves the Day in Opening Day Win

Sunday afternoon, I saw a Jaguars defense ready to pounce. The first play of the game said it all. After another offseason that left everybody questioning the pass rush, Matt Roth got in and sacked Matt Hasselbeck. Roth is just one of the new faces on defense that played a big role in Sunday’s win.

Paul Posluszny and Dawan Landry were very effective on run defense. And lets not forget about Dwight Lowery, who the jags just acquired in a trade with the Jets, his interception sealed the game. Yeah sure, they gave the Jaguars faithful a scare Sunday, but they rebounded and got the job done. I would say that, defensively, it should be a solid year.

Now offensively, I got nervous. The Jaguars offense lacked something that almost cost them the game, they lacked the killer instinct. They played the whole game being satisfied kicking field goals. Sure, points are points, it is better to get something than nothing. But when you have the ball at the opponents 1 yard line, you need to put the ball in the end zone.

The question is, whose fault is it? Players or plays? Maurice Jones-Drew is a great running back, and ninety percent of the time he’s gonna break free from the first tackle, but when you call run plays all afternoon the defense is gonna pick up on it and stuff the box.

That’s when you let Luke McCown go to work. This guy was chosen over David Garrard to lead this team to victory. If Jack Del Rio feels that McCown can do that, then lets see it! The play-calling today suggested that, maybe, there isn’t a lot of faith in McCown either.

At some point the coaching staff is going to have to open up the offense and score points. The defense will not always be able to bail them out. What’s gonna happen when the Saints visit in three weeks? The Saints made a very good Green Bay defense look shaky. What happens if the Jags defense falters?

The offense needs to be ready to score points and put the game away. If the offense had scored at least one more touchdown today, nobody would have thought about a comeback. Instead, with three field goals we were left on the edge of our seats. It’s a good thing the defense showed up to bail out an extremely conservative offense.
