Plenty of Options for the Jaguars in Free Agency

Finally, the NFL has come back to work from the longest work stoppage in its history, and not a moment too soon as training camps will begin to kick off starting tomorrow. First though, the feeding frenzy is on for getting draft picks signed, talking to restricted free agents, and undrafted free agents, it’s like shark week come early.

The Jaguars report to camp Wednesday and the first preseason game is on Thursday August 11th in Foxboro, Mass. The question here is who will the Jags add once free agency starts on Friday? The team is looking into help on the defensive side of the ball, mostly linebackers and secondary help. The team could also land a wide receiver because they have plenty of wiggle room under the cap and under the new CBA they MUST spend money.

Paul Posluszny has been named as a target in free agency at linebacker for the Jags, and would really help bolster a struggling defense. Posluszny has spent his entire career with the Buffalo Bills, and would come relatively cheap. He is a solid tackler and can make a few plays across the field, but is not much for getting after the quarterback, as he only has three sacks for his career. Posluszny is good against the run which would help when facing the Titans and Texans who have very good running attacks.

The secondary is also going to need help, rumors have the Jags looking at Eric Weddle and Michael Huff as possibilities but the team is also going to need extra help at corner. Nnamdi Asomugha is the highest profile of the cornerbacks in free agency and the most expensive as he has asked for twenty million dollars a year.

Others that could be on the radar for the Jags are Jonathan Joeseph, who is a very good corner in his own right and won’t cost nearly as much as Nnamdi, but they could also look at a William Gay from Pittsburgh or Fabian Washington from Baltimore. Plus you never know who is going to be released so that teams can get under the salary cap, which makes making a hasty decision now a bad idea.

Could the Jags add a wide out to help out the offense? It is a possibility, but don’t look for them to break the bank for anyone either because the defense is a more pressing issue. The team could look into a Sydney Rice, who has great amounts of talent, or go after Lance Moore who can make plays. Again though, don’t expect the team to go all out for someone at this spot, unless they feel it’s in the teams best interests.

That being said we are only two weeks away from the start of football. Moves will be made and made quick to try and get free agents into camp. All we can hope for is that the team improves in these spots and no injuries occur. It’s finally time for some football, bring on the Patriots!
