Top Ten All-Time Jaguars: #5 Mark Brunell

Today we move into the top five of the all-time greatest Jaguars. The number five selection on the list is one of the names that helped to build the team into contenders in just their second season of existence. This selection holds the majority of the records at his position and comes to the NFL from Washington University. The Jaguars traded for this man before the inaugural season to be the leader of the team. Here is number 5:

5. Mark Brunell Quarterback

Stats: Played in 120 games over 9 seasons with the Jaguars starting in 117 of the games he played. Brunell posted a 63-54 record with the team and holds the majority of the teams passing records. Brunell has the second highest completion percentage in team history with 60.4 completing 2184 of 3616 passes. In his career in Jacksonville he threw 144 touchdowns and 86 interceptions. The 86 interceptions is a team record as is the career touchdown passes.

Brunell threw for 25698 yards in his Jaguars career again a team record. Really the only records he does not hold for a quarterback are the rookie records. He had a career 85.4 quarterback rating while in Jacksonville. Mark was also sacked 333 times in his Jaguars career. Mark was 4-4 in his playoff career, twice leading the team to the AFC championship game, once in 1996 the teams second year of play losing to the Denver Broncos, the second time in 1999, losing to the Tennessee Titans. Mark also led the team to one of the biggest blow out playoff wins in NFL history in 1999 in a 62-7 win over the Miami Dolphins. The Jaguars traded for Mark before the inaugural season, getting him from the Green Bay Packers where he backed up future Hall of Famer Brett Favre.

Mark belongs this high on the list for every stat named here, and because of his success with an expansion team. While he may not be a Hall of Fame quarterback he is the best in Jaguars short history. Now that we have cracked the top five players things start to get harder as to who goes where. The player that sits at number four always gives receivers and quarterbacks fits and I’ll try to cover all the bases with his stats and why he belongs at number 4.

They lost to New England in 96, not Denver. The big miracle that was was beating Denver because they had the best record in the nfl and had been pick by most all year to win the superbowl. It’s also when Woody Paige called us a bunch of nobodys and “jagwads.” I still remember watching the local news reporting live from the stadium at 2 am to welcome the players back! I wanted to be there so bad!

Damn right we beat Denver — and by the exact same score as we’d stomped the Bills the week before! And both were in stadiums where one team had rarely lost a playoff game and the other had NEVER lost a playoff game! I stood in the median of 3rd Street in Jax Beach for over 2 hours jumping and hollering at every car that passed — including cop cars that would fire up their lights for the #8 jersey I was flaunting! Mark may never rank as the #1 Jaguar, but I’ll wager he is the most-loved, -admired player we’ve ever had, bar none. His dismissal was a lesson in how NOT to treat a man who’s done all he can (despite taking a cheap shot to the knee from that Cleveland a**hole that killed his maneuverability) for his team. I will always consider Mark Brunell as the match that lit the fire for the Jacksonville Jaguars as a franchise. And that 2 AM reception was enough to make grown men cry. Go Jags!

what football “genius” ranked Mathis higher than Brunell??? have you been to a Jags game and seen the production of either player? Mathis should be honored just to hold Brunell’s jock strap.
