Harper and Weddle Two Solid Free Agent Options for the Jaguars

With the NFL lock out still raging along, here are some possibilities for the Jaguars as far as free agency goes once the lock out ends. Names have been thrown around as possible help for the team at the safety position.

The two highest profile of these names are Eric Weddle and Roman Harper. Both of these players have tremendous upside and are both good enough to have a solid impact on the team. Now the last anyone saw of Roman Harper on the field the Seattle Seahawks were making him look like a fool and burning him all day.

Harper may not be the greatest as far as coverage but he is a solid tackler and can make big plays as he forced 6 fumbles and had one interception last season. Harper also had 98 total tackles last season. Harper has the talent to really help the Jags and will be looking to show that what we last saw of him was a fluke and not what kind of player he is.

The second of these two men is Eric Weddle who has spent his first four seasons with the San Diego Chargers. Weddle is a hard hitter but did not make many turnovers last season as he only had 2 interceptions and only has six for his career. Now while the Jags have serious hopes of possibly getting Weddle there may be a reluctance to leave the San Diego area as he is from Fontana, California.

Eric did match Harper in tackles last season as he had 96 total. Weddle would definitely add a hard hitting threat to the defensive backfield and make receivers in the AFC South not want to come make a catch near him.

My Take: The Jags would be better off taking Roman Harper, while his coverage is spotty he makes a lot of plays and turnovers which is going to be a bigger help to the team going against QB’s like Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub, and now Jake Locker. Harper just presents a bigger helping cause for the team than Eric Weddle.

On the offensive side of the ball the Jags could use a solid back up punch to Maurice Jones Drew. Two guys that come to mind that share the same last name is the Williams duo of DeAngelo and Cadillac. Both players have played close by in the NFC South with the Panthers and Bucs respectively. While one is in the same breed as Jones-Drew, the other is more a ground and pound type.

DeAngelo Williams sits in the same breed as Maurice in the sense that he can run and catch and is very quick footed when hitting the hole. Heading into his sixth season Williams has over 4200 yards gained and 35 touchdowns and the plus is that he doesn’t turn the ball over as he’s only lost 5 fumbles in his career. While he did sustain a foot injury last season don’t look for this to be too much of a problem in the upcoming year.

Cadillac Williams is entering his seventh year in the league and is more of a ground and pound sort of back. With that being said he may have worn out his welcome in Tampa with the emergence of LaGarrett Blount, especially after injuries have taken its toll on a once promising career. Cadillac does have 3677 career yards and 24 touchdowns. He did show glimpses of what he once was and could be again if he can stay healthy. He could definitely add an extra presence to the team by grinding out tough yards in key situations and when the pace of the game needs to be slowed down.

My Take: With better numbers and a less scary injury history the choice should go down to DeAngelo Williams. He may not come as cheap as Cadillac but he doesn’t carry the baggage and has been in this position of sharing the backfield before while he shared the rock in Carolina with Jonathan Stewart as part of the Smash and Dash duo. DeAngelo just adds that extra threat that teams will have to carefully prepare for.

These are just some possible choices for the Jags to pursue once free agency finally does get started. Hoping the lock out ends soon is the vision of all the fans and teams. Once it finally does end and the bidding war begins look for the Jags to be in the thick of things to further improve the team and get ready for what could be a very competitive season.
