Jaguars Not Likely to Take a Quarterback Early

I’m not an advocate of waiting to draft the future leader of your franchise, but I’m reconsidering that stance for this year’s draft class. There’s a possibility that there could be a run on quarterbacks in the late first to the mid 2nd round. If it happens at the end of the 1st round, the Jaguars could be in a difficult position in terms of taking a quarterback, but by the same token, there may not be a guy left for the Jaguars to justify the 16th pick of the draft with taking.

Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton will both be gone by the time the Jaguars pick in the first round. Jake Locker may be available, and if he is, I hope the Jaguars draft him. He has enormous upside, and the Jaguars can give him that developmental time behind David Garrard.

If Jake Locker isn’t available, the Jaguars should pass on quarterbacks. While Christian Ponder’s draft stock has been skyrocketing, he is not worth a first round pick, especially the middle of the first round. That leaves the Jaguars with one spot to take quarterbacks, the 2nd round.

I’m assuming, as I write this, that trades will be very difficult to get done without the option of trading players. That would put the Jaguars at the 17th pick of the second round. At this point, it will be time to draft a quarterback of the future.

I don’t think Ponder will be there at pick number 49. I expect Kaepernick to be available as well as Dalton and Devlin. Any one of these guys would be a solid pick for the Jaguars. I personally favor Kaepernick over the others because he has the tools necessary to be an elite quarterback as opposed to just a solid starter.

The Jaguars will draft a QB, that’s not in question. The question is who and when. We won’t know for sure until later this month, but the draft is less than three weeks away. It should be a fun and exciting time to be a Jaguars fan.
