Left Guard Manuwai put on Notice by Del Rio

Sporting News reports that Jags coach Jack Del Rio is putting LG Vince Manuwai on notice to get off some weight and play better:

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has put left guard Vince Manuwai on notice: Shape up or ship out. Del Rio says Manuwai, who started all 16 games last season, must lose weight and perform better to keep his roster spot, let alone his starting job. Manuwai hasn’t been the same since tearing an ACL in September of ’08.

“Vinny still has a ways to go,” Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union. “Vinny’s working at it. He’s got his weight down. He’s trying, but he needs to play better. I think he knows that. He’s working hard at it.”

Manuwai, who turns 30 in July, agreed with the assessment and said he welcomes the competition presented by this week’s trade for guard Justin Smiley. “I never shy away from competition,” Manuwai told the Times-Union. “When they run fourth-and-1 on my side, I love it. Some guys are afraid of it.”
