Jags Playoff Hopes All But Gone After 35-7 Loss to Patriots

The playoffs in the AFC are nothing but a distant memory. Sunday the team dropped its third straight game and fourth in its last five after going 6-4 in its first 10, ending any playoffs hopes after a 35-7 thrashing by the New England Patriots. The Jags couldn’t stop Tom Brady, who threw four touchdown passes, nor the Pats young D, that stopped the Jags offense all day long.

The Jags also were beat up by Randy Moss who scored three touchdowns, and Wes Welker, who caught 13 passes as the Pats did just about what ever they wanted all day. It looked like the Jags were playing more for a better draft pick than a spot in the 2009 NFL Playoffs.

New England put the game away in the second quarter, as they led 7-0 after a first Moss score, then scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to put a final nail in the Jags coffin by halftime. David Garrad played about as bad as he did in Seattle two months ago, as he was 19-for-25 for 185 yards with two picks. The offense had just 275 yards on offense, as they were able to only amass just 98 yards rushing.

Brady was out of sight, missing on just three passes going 23-for-26 for 267 yards with four TD’s. He also had plenty of time to throw, as the Jags were unable to do much to get pressure on him. It is yet another indication as to how the Jags have gone backwards in this recent losing streak.

Not only that, they were beat up for 197 yards rushing, as Sammy Morris led the Pats with 95 yards on 12 carries and a score. New England, who clinched a playoff spot with the win and the AFC East title, averaged 5.5 yards per carry.

The 7-8 Jags will wrap up the season next Sunday in frigid Cleveland, as they take on the Browns, who have won three straight after beating the Raiders at home Sunday.
