New GM Smith Has the Power to Cut Players

The Florida Times-Union says that new GM Gene Smith has plenty of power, and some of that power also includes dumping players when he feels like it:

Gene Smith doesn’t want to admit it, but he has quietly become one of the most powerful executives in the NFL. As Smith outlined the scope of his duties in his first news conference Wednesday since being named Jaguars general manager on Jan. 12, he made it obvious he’s in charge of making all football personnel decisions. Smith not only will make the call on bringing in players, but he has the authority to cut players on the 53-man roster, which is often the prerogative of the head coach. “Any decision that pertains to the roster, that’s ultimately mine,” Smith said.
