Change Near the Top: Harris Stepping Down as V.P. of Player Personnel

The Jaguars will have a new name at the top in 2009, as today V.P. of player personnel James “Shack” Harris has resigned, five days before the completion of what was his sixth year on the job.

“I want to thank Shack for his contributions and his hard work in helping us rebuild this team,” owner Wayne Weaver said in a release. “When he and Jack Del Rio joined us six years ago we were coming off three straight losing seasons, and Shack helped build a strong roster that returned us to the playoffs. Though this season has not been what we all hoped for, there have been many great moments over the last six years. I want to wish Shack all the best in the coming year and beyond.”

The team is filling the position from within, as Gene Smith has been promoted to the position held by Harris. Smith has been with the team since 2004. Harris is getting a lot of the blame for the team signing receiver Jerry Porter and cornerback Drayton Florence during the offseason. The Jaguars (5-10) paid a combined $23 million guaranteed to Porter and Florence to step into starting roles.
