Unfocused Jags Come Off Bye with Ugly 23-17 Loss to Browns

Coming off a bye week with a team coming in with severe distractions, the Jagaurs instead of taking advantage of a 2-4 Browns team instead allowed them to set the tempo in an eventual 23-17 Cleveland win that sends the Jags to 3-4 on the season.

Cleveland didn’t need to hear anything else about tight end Kellen Winslow and all the issues that went along with him this past week. Instead they came out and played maybe their best game of the year considering all that was stacked against them. The Jags on the other hand, seem like a team playing in a complete fog.

Derek Anderson, finally showing signs of coming out of his slump, went 14-for-27 for 246 yards with one TD and a QB rating of 95.6 for Cleveland. Donte’ Stallworth caught his first TD as a member of the Browns, and Jamal Lewis bowled over anyone in his way, going for 81 yards on 20 carries with a score.

The Jags, who never led in the game, had a golden shot to win in on the second-to-last play from the Browns 26 as David Garrard launched a pass into the left side of the end zone for Matt Jones, who tipped it in the air twice before Nick Sorsensen knocked it away. With one second left, Garrard overthrew everyone in the end zone and the Browns survived.

The Browns built a 17-7 lead at the half, but the Jags came back as Garrard hit Jones for an 8-yard score to make it 17-14 with 10:27 left in the third quarter. A Josh Scobee 53-yard field goal tied the game at 17 with 8:48 to go.

Coming right back with a big series, the Browns marched down the field and in the end settled for a Phil Dawson chip shot to make it 20-17 with 4:35 left. A fumble on the kickoff that the Browns jumped on resulted in another Dawson field goal to make it 23-17 with 4:06 to go.

At 3-4, the Jags should at least get to .500 on Sunday when they play the awful Cincinnati Bengals in Cincy at 1pm.

Did you notice the bad choice of music during the Browns time out on the Jags last drive. Why would you play “Who let the Dawgs out”. Did they not know in the press box that the Browns fans sit in the Dawg Pound? Bad choice but very funny for us Browns fans in attendance.
