Scobee, Scobee Doo!

The Jaguars avoided their first 0-3 start since 2003 by winning a thriller in Indianapolis 23-21, thanks to K Josh Scobee nailing a 51-yard FG with :08 left to seal the victory. QB David Garrard and company took over with 1:07 left after the Colts had just gone up 21-20. Facing a 4th and 1, Garrard threw the ball incomplete.

However, the Jaguars got new life as Colts LB Freddie Keiaho was called for pass interference. On the next play, Garrard’s pass was tipped, but it miraculously wound up in the hands of FB Montell Owens for a 10-yard completion. Two more pass completions moved the ball down into field goal range, and Scobee worked his magic to give the Jaguars a win.

The real story was how the Jaguars got back to doing what they do best: running the football. The much-maligned offensive line held up well as they did not allow a sack and opened holes for the running game. The Jaguars carried the ball 48 times (2nd most in team history) for 236 yards.

RB Maurice Jones-Drew pleaded for the ball more earlier in the week, and his wish was granted. Jones-Drew had 19 carries for 107 yards and 1 TD. He also led the Jaguars with 4 catches for 59 yards. RB Fred Taylor also contributed by running the ball 26 times for 107 yards.

As a result of the dominance in the running game, the Jaguars won the time of possession battle 41:35 – 18:25 over the Colts. It kept QB Peyton Manning off the field for most of the second half. The 12:18 drive that resulted in the Jaguars going up 20-14 was the longest drive in team history.

Manning was able to pick on CB Drayton Florence most of the game and keep the Colts close. But Manning threw two more interceptions, including one that was returned 61 yards for a touchdown by CB Rashean Mathis (who got away with pass interference on the play as he tugged on WR Marvin Harrison’s jersey).

The Jaguars play their next two games at home against the Texans and Steelers.

Game winning kicks are nothing new to Josh. Not bad for an ol’ Louisiana Tech boy.

Great win against the Colts! It was great to be at the game in Indy and wearing a Jag jersey. The silence from Indy fans in that stadium as Scobee made the field goal was great.
