Taylor Apologizes, Porter Practices

For the short term, the big story around the Jaguars will be Fred Taylor’s surprising citation for disorderly conduct this weekend in Miami, but the longer lasting story–the Jaguars hope–is the return to the field of wide receiver Jerry Porter.

Let’s start with Taylor first.

The Jaguars captain apologized to the organization and specifically the Weaver’s for the bad press that followed his verbal altercation with a Miami Beach police officer.

“I really do, sincerely from the bottom of my heart want to apologize to the Weaver’s and the organization for this type of press,” Taylor said. “At this point, it’s not me vs. the cop, that grudge match, weather right or wrong.”

Taylor opted to capitalize on the incident, by speaking to the team, especially focusing on the younger players, to let them know the lesson he learned.

“Adversity reveals true character,” Taylor said. “I was able to do something to hopefully help the younger guys out and try to point them in the right direction from my mistakes.”

Jack Del Rio said that he was confident that the league would not punish Taylor for the incident.

“I spoke with Fred and he was able to share with his teammates this morning,” said Del Rio. “It’s a reminder that you give proper respect to authority figures and you won’t have those issues. Fred is a great guy. He’s been a team captain. He’ll be a team captain when I appoint them. I have every confidence in Fred Taylor and his approach.”

As for Porter, he practiced Monday for the first time since his off-season surgery. Last week, Del Rio said that as soon as Porter started practicing, you could start the clock and he would be ready two weeks after that. While he didn’t back away from that statement, Del Rio did leave the door open for the possibility for Porter to return this week for the season opener against the Titans.

“Had he not practiced today, then we wouldn’t be any closer to getting him on the field,” Del Rio said. “Now that he’s back working, that process begins. But there is really nothing other to add to the story than that.”
