Toefield Could Be Trade Bait in Jags Crowded Backfield
Posted by Matt Loede on August 7th, 2007 filed in NewsFifth-year running back LaBrandon Toefield has been looking good in camp for the Jags.
So good in fact, that he may be on the trading block if the team decides to go that route with the 5-foot-11, 235 pound bruiser. Last season Toefield had just 10 carries in the regular season, and right now he is listed as the 4th back on the depth chart, meaning that this season the carries may be few and far between. “Hopefully, I’ll get a lot of playing time in the preseason and get some of this rust off. It feels like forever since I’ve been out there,” he said.
Right now Toefield is behind Fred Taylor, Maurice Drew and Alvin Pearman, plus fullback Greg Jones is back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, another guy that could take carries away from him. Toefield resigned with the Jags as a free agent, and while now it looks like a bad decision, he does not regret it. “I feel comfortable here with the decision I made. I sat down with my family and we felt this is the best decision for us. I’m happy to be here and I’ll just roll with it,” he said.
Despite getting some value for him, one person that hopes they keep Toefield is running back coach Kennedy Pola. “We need him,” he said. “He contributes in a lot of ways, on special teams and giving our defense a lot. What he’s doing is more than just game day on Sunday.”
